Burden Park Tennis Club (Inc) · Springvale South

A Legacy Still Playing.

Six courts on Olympic Avenue, in continuous use since land was first granted by Springvale City Council in 1959 — still home to juniors, seniors, social players and life members today.

About Us

A community-based club, playing since 1960.

Burden Park Tennis Club welcomes members diverse in age, standard and nationality. Our competition teams span Juniors, Seniors, Night Tennis, WDTA Pennant and mid-week ladies' and men's tennis, alongside a strong social tennis following — with coaching available for every standard.

Our six mod-grass courts are floodlit for night tennis and available for casual hire. The clubhouse — fully equipped kitchen, change rooms, outdoor shelter and barbecue — is maintained largely by volunteer members, the same spirit that has kept this club running for over sixty years.

Our Story

Since 1959, on land granted by Springvale council.

An unusually rich history for a suburban club — from a first clubhouse built out of the remains of an old Volkswagen, to a forced relocation, to six modern floodlit courts today.

  1. 1959

Springvale City Council makes land available at Burden Park; the tennis club, bowling club and a croquet club are all founded on the same grant.

  2. 1960

First two courts completed in August; the first competition match is played in October.

  3. 1961

First clubhouse built by volunteer labour from the remains of an old Volkswagen crate, ready for the club's first AGM on 25 August.

  4. 1962–64

Four more courts built, bringing the total to six.

  5. 1967

Subsidence on the original site (an old tip) forces relocation to the current Olympic Avenue site.

  6. 1976

Six new en-tous-cas courts and a clubhouse officially open on Olympic Avenue on 15 August, built at the council's expense.

  7. 2008

Lighting installed to all six courts, enabling night tennis.

  8. 2009

A water bore installed to cope with water restrictions.

  9. 2022

All six courts converted to synthetic mod-grass, with new lighting and fencing.
